Community Schools (previously County Schools)
are owned and funded by the Local Education Authority (LEA) who also appoint Governors.
Voluntary Controlled Schools are owned by the relevant church, but funded by the LEA, and some Governors are appointed by the LEA; the rest by the church. Admission policy has to be agreed with the LEA.
Voluntary Aided Schools are church-owned and church bears 10% of cost of external repairs and alterations; otherwise funded by LEA. Admission policy and Staff are the responsibility of the Governors, the majority of whom are appointed by the church.
All LEA schools are obliged to follow the National Curriculum, but in church schools RE and worship will usually be denominational, and with a greater emphasis on Christianity.
